The sixth grade Literacy Extension class is asking for the approval to use A Long Walk to Water
by Linda Sue Park in their classrooms.  The book would used to teach plot and character changes
as the plot of a story unfolds.  It would be included in a multicultural unit on overcoming adversity.
In accordance with school board policy, the book, A Long Walk to Water, will be available for
parents to preview in the library at Shadow Ridge during open library times this summer.

Estimado padre/tutor,

¡Cómo ha volado el año escolar 2014-2015!  Felicidades a usted y a su hijo por llegar a esta fase del año. Deseo mantenerles actualizados sobre un cambio académico positivo que implementamos en Shadow Ridge Middle School (SRMS) durante el año escolar 2014-2015.  Tras repasar años de información sobre el logro de los estudiantes, investigar intervenciones de alfabetización, y visitar varias escuelas secundarias (“middle schools”) en el área metro de Denver, aumentamos la cantidad de minutos que los estudiantes pasan estudiando alfabetización.

El aumentar la cantidad de minutos estudiando alfabetización cambió el itinerario general de seis a siete clases, con la clase de Artes del Lenguaje dividida en dos clases: Lectura y Escritura.  Aumentamos nuestro día escolar de seis períodos de clase a ocho períodos, aumentamos las clases principales (“core”) a cinco clases (matemáticas, lectura, ciencias, estudios sociales, y escritura), dos clases electivas, y un período de intervención antes/después del almuerzo que provee minutos adicionales de alfabetización y matemáticas para todos los estudiantes. 

Los datos de las evaluaciones MAPS indican que hemos logrado mejorías.  Sin embargo, necesitamos más de un año para observar patrones y tendencias.  Los beneficios de haber aumentado la cantidad de minutos estudiando alfabetización ayudará a todos los estudiantes en las áreas de comprensión de lectura, escritura, y análisis de literatura.  El aumentar los minutos que los estudiantes pasan estudiando alfabetización y matemáticas durante Advisory también ha beneficiado a los estudiantes.  Durante los próximos años usaremos Moby Max en matemáticas. 

El día escolar seguirá con el horario implementado con campanas.  Todos los estudiantes cambiarán de clase a clase a la misma hora, y los maestros estarán en el pasillo durante ese tiempo.  Los períodos de clases serán de aproximadamente 50 minutos, con 30 minutos para almuerzo y 17 minutos de intervención durante el almuerzo.  Continuaremos con Advisory los lunes, martes, jueves y Viernes.  Advisory ayuda a que los estudiantes continúen su tiempo de lectura silenciosa, matemáticas en línea, y tengan un “maestro principal” en SRMS.

Nuestro personal ya aceptó el cambio y está ansioso de ponerlo en práctica.  Nos alegra hacer cambios positivos y poder enfocarnos en un aumento en la alfabetización.  El distrito también ha sido diligente con relación a un cambio en la alfabetización en todo el distrito.  Usted puede ver la guía del distrito en nuestro Five Star Journal cuatrimestral o por medio de leer el plan de alfabetización en el sitio web del distrito.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The 2014-15 school year has flown by!  Congratulations to you and your student(s) for making it through the year.  I wanted to keep you updated regarding a positive academic change we implemented at Shadow Ridge Middle School (SRMS), during the 2014-15 school year.  After reviewing years of student achievement data, researching literacy interventions, and visiting a handful of other Denver Metro middle schools we increased your student’s literacy minutes.

We increased the literacy minutes, which changed the overall schedule from six to seven classes, with the Language Arts class broken down into a Reading and a Writing class.  We increased our six period day to an eight period day, increased to five core content classes (math, reading, science, social studies, and writing) two elective classes, and an intervention time before/after lunch involving additional literacy and math minutes for every student. 

The data from MAPS Assessments has indicated improvement.  However, we do need more than one year to view patterns and trends.  The benefits of having increased literacy minutes  will assist all students in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, and analyzing literature.  Increasing literacy and math minutes during advisory has also benefitted the students.  We will be using Moby Max for the upcoming years, in the area of math. 

The school day will remain the same time schedule implemented with bells.  All students will be passing from class to class at the same time, with all teachers out in the hallway.  The class periods will be approximately 50 minutes long with a 30 minute lunch and 17 minute intervention time attached to lunch.  We will continue holding Advisory on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.  Advisory will allow students to continue the silent reading time, online math, and have a “Home Room Teacher” at SRMS.

Our staff has embraced the change and is excited to move forward.  We are thrilled to make a positive change and move forward toward an increased focus on literacy.  The district has also been diligent regarding a district-wide literacy change.  You may follow the district’s guidance in our quarterly Five Star Journal or by reviewing the literacy plan on the district website.
