GIVE KIDS A SMILE DAY – Friday, February 7, 2014!Give Kids a Smile Day is a day of free education and treatment for KIDS organized by the Colorado Dental Association every February. To qualify for a Give Kids a Smile Day appointment, your child/family must meet ALL 5 of the following criteria.  The child needing an appointment must be 17 years old or younger. Your family must be low-income and unable to afford dental care. Your child must be dentally uninsured (no dental insurance or CHP+ coverage). You must have transportation to get to your appointment. You must be able to show-up at your appointment on time. If you are a match with the 5 requirements above, we welcome you to participate in Give Kids a Smile Day.  Please remember that appointments are first-come, first-served. Dear Parents,

The break is over, the holidays have been celebrated, and we are now proceeding  into 2014.  It is hard to believe that we have progressed to the half-year mark!  Shadow Ridge has had many celebrations and memorable events this school year.  We are extremely proud of the students in our National Junior Honor Society (NJHS).  The NJHS graciously sponsored several families in need for the holidays, they also collected hundreds of cans of food for the food drive. 

The SRMS Music Department students displayed amazing musical talent in their concerts.  The SRMS Drama Department and Music Department presented three performances of “Little Mermaid.” The production was amazing.  Congratulations to both the students and teachers who did an unbelievable job.  There are very few middle schools that would take on the production of a musical.

Winter has arrived in Colorado.  Please remind your child to wear a coat to school for lunch recess.  The students need fresh air and we do not like to allow students outside without proper gear.  Thank you for assisting us with this health concern.  Please remember the district will post any school closures on the television news and radio.  We do not have a late start snow schedule like some districts.  Our staff understands you, as parents, are doing your best to get your child to school safely during inclement weather. 

Please remember to refer to Infinite Campus for your child’s academic progress.  Infinite Campus is a student database program accessible through the “web.”  In order to access Infinite Campus, go to SRMS Website and click on the link Infinite Campus.  Family registration is necessary before you are able to pull up various records from your child’s past and present school years. 

The Shadow Ridge Middle School Staff is constantly focused on student achievement.  In order to improve student achievement in reading and writing, language arts and ESL teachers are using the Reading and Writing Workshop approach to instruction, which emphasizes a structure of time that allows students to be reading, writing, thinking, and discussing for the majority of each class period. Adolescent literacy research emphasizes the importance of students reading and writing every day, for important, relevant reasons.  Teachers provide modeling and facilitate systems, structures, routines, and rituals that allow for student communities of learners to go deep with learning.  Key elements of the workshop approach include increased student choice and teachers working with individuals or small groups on a daily basis to meet each student’s learning needs.

One last important topic I’d like to mention is that the first round of Choice is January 31st.  It is critical to remember that applying for Choice is necessary for students out of their home school’s boundary every year.  Please review the process on the Adams 12 website (www.adams12.org).

Estimados Padres,

               Las vacaciones han terminado, las fiestas han sido celebradas y ahora nos adentramos en 2014. ¡Es difícil creer que ya hemos progresado hasta la mitad del año! Shadow Ridge ha tenido muchas celebraciones y eventos memorables este curso escolar. Estamos extremadamente orgullosos de los alumnos de nuestra National Junior Honor Society (NJHS). La NJHS ha tenido la deferencia de patrocinar a varias familias necesitadas en las vacaciones, también ha recopilado cientos de latas de comida para la campaña de recolección de comida. 

              Los alumnos del Departamento de Música de SRMS han exhibido un asombroso talento musical en sus conciertos. Los Departamentos de Arte Dramático y de Música han presentado tres representaciones de “La Sirenita”. La producción fue asombrosa. Enhorabuena tanto a los alumnos como a los maestros que hicieron un trabajo increíble. Hay pocas escuelas secundarias que se atreverían con la producción de un musical.

               El invierno ha llegado a Colorado. Por favor, recuérdenles a sus hijos que deben llevar un abrigo a la escuela para el recreo del mediodía. Los alumnos necesitan el aire fresco y no nos gusta dejar que salgan sin la ropa apropiada. Gracias por ayudarnos con este tema concerniente a la salud. Por favor, recuerden que el distrito publicará el cierre de cualquier escuela en las noticias de la televisión y la radio. No tenemos un horario de comienzo tardío por nieve como hacen otros distritos. Nuestro personal comprende que ustedes, como padres, hacen lo que pueden para llevar a sus hijos a la escuela de forma segura durante las inclemencias del tiempo.

               Por favor, recuerden ir al Infinite Campus para ver el progreso académico de sus hijos. Infinite Campus es una base de datos estudiantil accesible mediante la web. Para acceder al Infinite Campus, vaya al sitio web de SRMS y pulse en el vínculo Infinite Campus. Es necesario registrarse como familia antes de poder recuperar los registros varios de los cursos escolares presentes y pasados de su hijo.

               El Personal de Shadow Ridge Middle School está constantemente concentrado en el logro de los alumnos. Para mejorar el logro de los alumnos en lectura, escritura, artes lingüísticas y ESL, los maestros están usando la aproximación a la instrucción del Taller de Lectura y Escritura que enfatiza una estructura temporal que permite a los alumnos estar leyendo, escribiendo, pensando y discutiendo la mayor parte de cada periodo de clase. Las investigaciones sobre alfabetización adolescente enfatizan la importancia de que los alumnos lean y escriban todos los días, por razones importantes y relevantes. Los maestros proporcionan modelos y facilitan sistemas, estructuras, rutinas y rituales que permiten que las comunidades de alumnos estudien y aprendan en profundidad. Los elementos clave de la aproximación de taller incluyen un aumento en las opciones de los alumnos y el que los maestros trabajen de forma individual o en pequeños grupos a diario para llegar a las necesidades de aprendizaje de cada alumno.

               Un último tema importante que me gustaría mencionar es que la primera ronda de Opción es el 31 de enero.
