November/December 2013

Dear Parents,

Thank you for attending the fall conferences!   We had an outstanding turnout for parent teacher conferences in October!  It is our goal for teachers, parents, and administrators to strive toward student achievement for every individual student in our building.   Teachers will notify parents at mid-quarter of any student who is below proficiency.  Please remember each parent/guardian may access student academic progress online through Infinite Campus (IC).  Our response time to parent calls/e-mails should be within 24-48 hours.  We may also be in contact with the parent if a student has unacceptable performance in scholarly habits of excellence, perseverance, preparation, perseverance, and respect.

Safety is our number one priority in our school.  Parents, we cannot stress enough the importance of ALL of our visitors to sign in at the office.  It is a state law and is posted on the front entrance of our school.  We do have a reliable security system that screens visitors in our building.  The security system is connected to the National Sex Offenders Registry with the swipe of a driver’s license. Teachers are being asked to have any adult who is not wearing a visitor sticker to return to the office to obtain one.  Thank you for your cooperation by having your license whenever you enter the building.  I want to take this opportunity to let you know that our entire staff is wearing a “SRMS Staff ID.”  Our expectation for our students is to also wear ID’s to school every day, every hour.  We have provided a lanyard and a Student ID for every student at SRMS.  The ID for every staff member and student is to be visible and worn above the waist.  Again, wearing an ID is a pertinent safety measure.  Replacement cost for an ID and a lanyard is $5 each.  They may be purchased in the office.

The winter months are upon us, please remind your child to bring a jacket.  We do go outside daily after lunch.  Going outside allows students to release some stress, get some fresh air, and allows us to move the traffic of 1,001 students to eat lunch within an hour and a two hour timeframe.  When the weather is not cooperative, we do stay inside, but it is very seldom that we hold students in the cafeteria the entire lunch time.  Thank you for supporting your child in being prepared with a coat for the Colorado weather.

As we move through the year, our students progress academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.  Our students sometimes experience difficult situations.  Please remind your child that the SRMS staff is here to help and assist in difficult situations.  We have solid resources to assist our students (i.e. counselors, teachers, and administrators. Safe 2 Tell on the school web page…).  It is extremely critical that we are made aware of the problem, so that we may assist your child.  Your child’s communication with a staff member is a key element.  This allows the school to solve these issues as quickly as possible.  Our goal is to provide a safe and conducive learning environment for every student who enters our building.

One last important topic I want to mention is the first round of Choice deadline is January 31st.   It is imperative to remember that applying for Choice is necessary for students out of their home school boundaries every year.  Please review the process on the Adams 12 website (www.adams12.org).  Applications may be submitted online.

Thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy the upcoming holiday season!

Sincerely,

Susie Wickham

Noviembre y diciembre de 2013

Estimados padres,

Sinceramente,

Susie Wickham

District outlines deadlines for 2014-2015 Choice process

Submit application by January 31st deadline for priority consideration

Last year, the Adams 12 Five Star Schools received more than 4,200 Choice applications for the 2013-2014 school year. In accordance with the state’s open enrollment law, the district’s Choice Program allows for students to apply to attend schools outside of their attendance area boundary. Those who are approved for Choice are responsible for their own transportation.

Both in-district and out-of-district students can apply for Choice. Out-of-district Choice requests are considered after in-district applications.  Acceptance to a Choice school is based upon several criteria: availability of space, sufficient teaching staff, appropriate programs and the necessary facilities for special needs students.  While not a guarantee, when possible, priority will be given to sibling applications for Choice so that families will attend the same school.  A second priority will be given to siblings who have a one-year lapse of concurrent enrollment.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools will determine the schools open to Choice for the 2014-2015 school year no later than December 1, 2013.  These will be published in the December issue of the Five Star Journal and will be posted online at the district web site at www.adams12.org/choice_schools.

The Choice application will be available on December 1st at http://www.adams12.org/choice/application.  For families without computer access, applications will be available at each school and at the Educational Support Center.

The deadline for priority consideration is January 31, 2014. Parents and students submitting an application for priority consideration will be notified of the results of their application no later than the third week of February. If the number of requests exceeds the spaces available for priority consideration in a given school, the district will hold a lottery.

The second deadline to submit a Choice application for the 2014-2015 school year will be March 31, 2014. As with the first round, if the number of requests exceeds the spaces available for priority consideration in a given school, the district will hold a lottery.  Notification of approval or denial will be made no later than the third week of April.

In addition to the two deadlines above, in some years a third round of Choice may be held in August if space is available.  While the 1st and 2nd round of Choice is lottery based, applications in the third round of Choice are processed on a first-come, first-served basis and submitted at the school.

The Adams 12 Admissions Office determines the acceptance of Choice requests. For traditional schools, extended-day tuition-based kindergarten does not go through the Choice Program.  For magnet schools, extended-day tuition-based kindergarten does go through the Choice Program.  In-district students are not required to apply for Choice to attend secondary programs like Horizon SOAR, Legacy 2000, Mountain Range International Language and Business, Northglenn High STEM Program and Thornton High International Baccalaureate (IB).  Application and acceptance to those programs goes through the individual school.  Out-of-district students must apply for Choice, if that particular school is open to Choice, be approved to attend the secondary school and must be approved to attend the school’s program via the school’s program application process.

Parents of extended-day, tuition-based kindergarteners at traditional schools should note that enrollment in that program does not automatically mean the student will go to the same school for first grade. The student must apply through the Choice Program for first grade placement if he/she wants to go to a school other than his/her boundary school.  Also note that the school the child attended for kindergarten may not necessarily be open for Choice.  Parents of extended-day, tuition-based kindergarteners for magnet schools do not need to reapply for Choice as their Choice approval remains in effect through the highest grade served at their magnet school.

The duration of a Choice placement is valid only for the grades which that school serves. For example, if a student attends a Choice elementary school, the approval is valid to the end of fifth grade, as long as there are no significant changes in that school’s enrollment or facilities. When a student transitions from elementary to middle school or from middle to high school, they must reapply for Choice. If they don’t, the student’s placement automatically reverts to their boundary school.

To learn more about the Choice Program and to get answers to frequently asked questions, please visit the district web site at http://www.adams12.org/choice or call 720-972-4055.

School-Wide Read-A-Thon

The students and staff of Shadow Ridge Middle School are looking forward to our 2nd annual Read-a-Thon on Thursday, October 31, 2013. Students will be participating in a variety of literacy activities throughout the day. These activities will include various guest readers, literacy games and activities and, most importantly, reading, for which students will be collecting pledges and donations.

Students will be bringing a pledge sheet home on October 10, 2013. Directions for collecting pledges and donations will be included on the pledge sheet.

We are asking students to return pledge sheets and all money/donations to their first core teacher on October 31, 2013.

The top earner from each grade level will be rewarded by becoming “PRINCIPAL FOR HALF A DAY,” while the principal they are replacing (Ms. Wickham, Mrs. Steinberger, Mr. Eipper) will become students for the half day and follow the winning student’s schedule. In addition, the top earner from each grade level will receive a Kindle.

We are looking forward to promoting literacy and raising money to support both technology and the library at Shadow Ridge. Thank you in advance for your support!

Dear Parents,

We are off to a great start and the first six weeks have progressed smoothly!  It is hard to believe this past week marks the end of the first quarter of the 2013-14 school year.  I am sure you have noticed Middle School is a time of great change for your student.  Students seem to grow inches overnight and begin to develop a sense of independence.  Hopefully by now, your child has a solid understanding of the school and the many teachers he/she interacts with on a daily basis.

Thank you for reinforcing the importance of attendance, promptness, academics at school and at home, and having your student wear their student identification badge everyday.  As most of you know, October is a critical month for us due to the “Official Count Day,” which determines how public schools are funded.  We appreciate your efforts in having your student at school during the count window (September 24th-October 8th) and every day of the school year.

Attendance is a critical factor in a student’s ability to attain the maximum benefit from the educational environment.  Some of you may have experienced a call or a letter regarding an attendance concern.  The district attendance intervention policy is based on the Positive Behavior Support (PBS) philosophy to help schools prioritize levels of student attendance concerns and direct resources proactively through the systems’ support strategies.  The following steps are being implemented to prevent attendance concerns:  1. A teacher will speak to a student once the student has 2-3 absences (excused or unexcused).   2.  When a student has 4-5 absences (excuse or unexcused) a teacher may make parent contact to discuss the possible attendance concerns.   3. When a student has 6-7 absences (excused or unexcused), an administrator will either call or send a letter to notify parents of his/her concern about continued absences. 4.  When a student reaches 8-10 absences (excused or unexcused), an administrator will arrange for a conference to be held with parents, student, and teachers to develop a Student Attendance Stipulation (Contract).  Again, the purpose of the guidelines is to assist your child in realizing the importance of school and becoming the best student possible.

The staff continues to support academics by providing extra help before/after school, during lunch, and at Homework Helpers (four days before and four days after school in the media center), and at SRMS Saturday School (every other Saturday).     Always feel free to contact your teacher by email or phone, with email being the more efficient source of communication.  Make sure you mark your calendars for Thursday, October 10th (5-8 p.m.) and Friday, October 11th (12 Noon – 3 p.m. & 4:30-7:30 p.m.) for SRMS Parent/Teacher Conferences.  There will be no school on Friday, October 11th due to morning training for staff and conferences beginning at noon.

Eighth (8th) grade parents, please note District 12 is sponsoring a High School Open House, November 13th from 5:45-7:50 p.m at the Adams 12 Five Star Schools Educational Support Center (ESC).  A general welcome will occur from 5:45-5:50 p.m., with school presentations starting at 6 p.m., 6:40 p.m, and 7:20 p.m.

Thank you for your support for our school wide fundraiser.  We are excited for the second annual SRMS Read-A-Thon.  Last year we raised $6,000 on short notice.  Our goal this year is to raise over $12,000.  As most of you know, the fundraiser is spent on building technology.  We continue to implement technology into our instruction in various methods.

Thank you for your continued care and support for your student, Shadow Ridge Middle School, and Adams County School District 12!

Sincerely,

Susie Wickham

Principal

Monday, September 16, 2013

Dear Parents and Students,                                                                                                    September 2013

Welcome to the 2013-14 school year!  The Shadow Ridge Middle School staff is eager to start the new school year!

We are thrilled to welcome 1,010 students.  Our summer has been a restful, yet busy one.  We have acquired a dozen new teachers to our school, most of them having prior experience within the district or another neighboring district.

We will continue to implement our mission throughout the school year, “Preparing 21st Century students to be productive and successful.”   This professional action ensures our mission of educating a well-rounded child.  The SRMS staff is prepared and committed to provide academic excellence by building a solid foundation for each student in a safe and clean environment.

Shadow Ridge Middle School is excited to continue 62+ minute content classes and offer a wide range of elective classes. Bells will be activated at the beginning of the day and the end of the day, with staggered grade level passing periods throughout the day.  Students will also eat with their grade level classmates.

We received our TCAP scores.  We placed a great deal of emphasis on writing this last year which led to some significant growth.  We will continue to work on writing in all content areas while also focusing on reading and math. I know your support for your child and our school has contributed to our growth.  I am confident that your child will experience a great deal of academic growth this year and perform well throughout the year.  Thank you for your continued support.

One grade level core piloted Standards Based Grading  (SBG) during the 2012-13 school year.  SBG is now being implemented not only at Shadow Ridge, but at all Adams 12 Schools.  Our continued work to improve student achievement goes hand and hand with SBG.  The purpose of SBG is simply to raise student achievement by clearly communicating a student’s progress toward learning outcomes.  Research supports that standards-based grading will help students learn more effectively through specific and timely feedback.  Additional standards based grading information may be found on our district website, www.adams12.org.

Another new area of focus is MAPS (Measures of Academic Progress).  The individualized assessments are given three times a year (fall, winter, and spring).  Staff and students set goals, review growth, and analyze areas of strengths while viewing areas of continued work.  The assessments are taken on the computer and assists with timely feedback.

Students, we welcome you to another year of middle school.  The staff is committed to your success academically.  Please continue to be prepared as you enter each individual class.  Although we do not have athletics, we do have extra-curricular opportunities that will allow a nice balance for an enjoyable and productive year.  We are encouraging you to participate in a club or intramurals.  Intramurals run throughout the year.  Our district data indicates a positive correlation between academic success and extra-curricular participation, so find an activity you enjoy!

Parents, the teachers and I would like to invite you to attend any of your student’s functions, as well as classes. Your communication and feedback regarding your child’s success is vital.  All staff members have email and voicemail, email is the most efficient source of communication for our staff.  Our goal is to return your call or email within 24-48 hours of receiving it.  We also encourage you to visit our school’s web page, it is a great source for updated information.  Please listen to the weekly auto-dialer messages, we will continue to call on the auto-dialer system for important updates or reminders.  The school newsletter is posted on the school website.  Newsletters will not be mailed or sent home with students.  If you do not have access to the internet, please stop by the office for a hard copy of the newsletter or have your child pick one up.
I am thrilled to be a part of SRMS and developing a well-rounded experience for your child.  Thank you for supporting your child, our staff, and our district!

Sincerely,
Susie Wickham
Principal

Estimados padres y estudiantes,

Atentamente,
Susie Wickham

In our ongoing efforts to provide the safest and secure environment for our students an additional security measure has been installed at our front doors called an AiPhone.

ALL doors will be locked, except during student arrival times.  In order to enter the building you will need to press the button on the column located near the ADA button.
An office member will greet and allow you access to the building.  As is our policy all visitors must check in at the office.  Please be ready to show identification.

Our doors will be unlocked for large student activities and family events.

Thank you for your partnership in keeping our students safe.

Dear Parents,

We hope that you had an enjoyable spring break. All Shadow Ridge Middle School staff members would like to thank you for your support through the state testing (TCAP). Thank you for your partnership in helping our students do their very best on the TCAP tests and for assisting us in our continual goal of increasing achievement for all students.

It is that time of the year when we start planning for year-end events. We hope to see you at school on April 18th, 19th, and 20th for the performances of "Dress Rehearsal for Murder". Many musical performances for all grades in choir, band, and orchestra will be held in May. Our awards ceremony will be the last day of your school for your student. If your student is an eighth grader, the last day of school will be Thursday, May 23rd. Eighth grade core celebrations will be the morning of May 23rd. If your student is a sixth or seventh grader, the last day of school will be Friday, May 24th. The last day for sixth and seventh graders will conclude at 12 Noon. The award ceremonies for sixth and seventh graders will be at one of three designated times on May 24th. Parent(s) of award recipients will be contacted by phone.

We have had the opportunity to enjoy some warm, sunny weather this spring. Please remind your student(s) of the District 12 School Dress Code Policy. Here are some of the frequent infractions we observe. For girls: Shirts must cover the shoulder, spaghetti straps, tank tops and halter tops are prohibited. Shirts with revealing necklines or armholes or exposed undergarments are prohibited. Skirts or shorts must be fingertip length when arms are resting at sides. For boys: all attire should be sized to fit without exposing undergarments, and buttocks. Students are not allowed to “sag.” Thank you for reviewing the district policy with your child and supporting our school to maintain the focus of academics.

We are extremely proud of all our students and their accomplishments at Shadow Ridge and beyond! In February, Vincent Abeyta, a seventh (7th) grader, won the Shadow Ridge Spelling Bee. Eighth (8th) grader, Josh Bapple and sixth (6th) grader, Peyton Steiner finished in the top three and also represented SRMS at the District 12 Spelling Bee. All three students competed at the District 12 Spelling Bee while Vincent Abeyta finished 8th and was sent on to the Colorado State Spelling Bee in March. On another note, SRMS finished 4th place out of a field of 17 schools at the Mathcounts North Metro Area competition. Please congratulate the team as well Cody Li finished 8th and Colton Snyder finished 12th at the Mathcounts North Metro Area competition. Congratulations to these students for their outstanding accomplishments!

Thank you for your continued support of your child’s achievement and support of SRMS!

Sincerely,

Susie Wickham

Dear Parents:

March is a busy month. The month is a busy month consisting of registration for the 2012-13 school year, the TCAP (Transitional Colorado Assessment Program) Assessments, and the staff versus student basketball game.

We should all keep in mind the importance of TCAP. The district focuses on a full body of evidence (SRI,-Scholastic Reading Inventory, District 12 Common Assessments, In Building Common Assessments, and TCAP) when making important Curriculum and Instruction decisions. Teachers also use assessment data to plan and drive their instruction for each class. However, TCAP is the most widely used assessment when a decision needs to be made regarding your student’s potential and possible best successful avenue in guiding schedules (used to guide necessary classes, such as remedial classes or advanced classes).

Last year, Shadow Ridge showed some solid gains in our scores and we expect that next year will look even better. In order to reach an improved status we need you to be cognizant of the dates and the importance of this state mandated test. Please help us support your students by remembering the dates of the TCAP Test, which will be March 6th-14th.

How can you help your student in preparation of the TCAP Assessments?

-Be sure that your child is in attendance every day and prepared to do the best
he/she can on the test. Please do not schedule trips, medical appointments, or
other personal events during this assessment period.

-Make sure that your child eats breakfast every morning

-Encourage your child to take their time and try to answer every question. Often                              students do not attempt the question if they do not know the answer. It is
important to remember that if students attempt the question, they can earn partial credit.
Receiving partial credit can make a significant difference in their categorical score (advanced, proficient, partially proficient, unsatisfactory).

-Instill in your child the importance of writing complete sentences when answering a question.

-Show interest in how the test went that specific day. This will display your belief                                regarding the importance of the assessment.

It is also important to know Adams 12 Five Star Schools has received some funds from a federal grant focused on drug-free schools. Dark Knight K-9 Detection Services will be providing contraband inspections utilizing non-aggressive and certified detection canines. The main priority of this program is prevention. SRMS will be participating in this program, along with other secondary schools in District 12, with random searches taking place up to once a month.

Thank you for your partnership in supporting your child, Shadow Ridge Middle School, and District 12 School district!

Sincerely,
